Simplifying Bottle And Can Returns WeCycle takes the hassle and mess out of the redemption process. WeCycle, Brand Partner Posted Thu, Aug 19, 2021 at 11:10 am ET

Whether you realize it or not, many of the beverages that you purchase on a regular basis such as soda, seltzer, and water come with a 5-cent fee charged to you as a deposit. This is part of the New York State Returnable Container Act, which is better known as the "Bottle Bill". This 5-cent deposit is paid back to you if you bring your cans back to a redemption center. The most common way to do this is through a reverse vending machine at your local grocery store where you feed the bottles and cans in, one-by-one. If you are like us and you tried to do the right thing for the environment and your wallet you go through this process on a regular basis. We are not alone in this practice because in New York in 2020 there were 5.5 billion plastic, glass, and aluminum beverage containers recycled. This amounts to a total of 241,505 tons that were kept out of landfills. At face value the number of containers being recycled is astounding yet surprisingly there are many that go unreturned each year. In 2016 there was over $102,000,000 in unclaimed 5-cent deposits which equates to over 2 billion containers that were not returned. How could this many containers and this much money go unclaimed each year? The answer is simply that for most people it's easier to throw these containers in their regular trash than to bring them back to a redemption center. Based on our own survey, even the people that do redeem them regularly find the process difficult, time consuming, and disgusting. Yes, disgusting. There are many pitfalls with the entire process that can turn you off very quickly such as a plastic bag that leaks its contents of beer or soda into your vehicle while you transport the containers, waiting in line for an available machine, the process of hand feeding sticky and smelly cans into the machines one-by-one, having a machine fill up during your returns and having to wait for it to be emptied, or the worst of them all which is having a machine completely break down while doing your returns.

With all of these issues it's easy to see why many people choose to not redeem and recycle them at all. This is where WeCycle can help by providing a simple on-demand at home pick up service. When you have saved up your bottles and cans and are ready for a pick up you can easily schedule it through our website. Our drivers will make the pick up and send over your payment to you electronically through PayPal, Venmo, or Chase QuickPay with Zelle. Redeeming your containers for cash has never been easier and if you are ready to try our services out you can visit our website at www.TryWeCycle.com or email us with any questions at WeCycleContact@gmail.com. We look forward to working together with you to increase recycling and put some extra cash back in your wallet.
